Overview

Shinas Generating Company (‘SGC’ or ‘the Company’) owns and operates the Sohar 3 IPP project. The project comprises of two power generation blocks with a combined contracted capacity of 1710 MW, located at Sohar in the North Al Batinah Governorate of the Sultanate of Oman.

The plant commenced commercial operations in 2019 has a contracted capacity of 1710 MW.

The power capacity of the plant is fully contracted to Oman Power and Water Procurement Company and is being used to meet the growing power demand in the main interconnected system. A consortium (‘the Founders’ or ‘the Promoters’ or ‘the Consortium’) comprising of Mitsui & Co. Ltd., ACWA Power and DIDIC signed the Power Purchase Agreement in March 2016.

History

The Sohar 3 IPP lumpsum turnkey EPC project was completed in a total of 39 months and 10 days from a greenfield site to full commercial operation. It is a combined cycle power plant envisaged on a build, own, and operate (“BOO”) framework in response to the request for proposal (RFP) from Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP). The new plant, constructed within Sohar, employs gas turbine technology, firing fuel-gas as the main fuel, and fuel-oil as the back-up fuel.
