Muscat (WAF): Work continues at the “Sohar 3” site, which is a power generation station by gas turbines in the port of Sohar. The station is characterized as an integrated cycle consisting of a combined cycle and is based on virgin land. The value of the project is estimated at more than one billion US dollars, and commercial operations are scheduled to start in January 2019. This new plant will generate more than 1,700 megawatts of energy, which is enough and even more to meet the energy needs of the new developments in the South Mina region. Sohar and the expansions of the second phase of the Sohar Port Free Zone recently, making it the second largest power generation plant in the Sultanate.
The Shinas Electricity Generation Company will undertake the development of this project, which is being jointly carried out by Mitsui, ACWA Power and the Dhofar International Development and Investment Holding Company, provided that the Oman Power and Water Purchase Company is the sole buyer of this project, and it is the entity that will supply the generated power to Oman's national grid.
Mark Gillin Kirchin, CEO of Sohar Port Company, emphasized the great importance of this new terminal, saying: We have achieved double growth in Sohar over the past twenty years, and our plans are progressing well towards achieving our continuous expansion. Our role is to provide world-class infrastructure before future tenants need it, in order to avoid any delays they may encounter as the production phase begins.
He added: This terminal depends on a large share of private sector investment, as the partnerships between the public and private sectors constitute a main pillar in the success stories that Sohar Port has made, since we started work in 2004.
On his part, Engineer Jamal Aziz, CEO of the region said Al Hurra, Sohar Port: The first phase of the free zone has already been leased from the practical point of view, while the technical teams are busy at this time planning the second phase.
He added: We are currently witnessing unprecedented rates of investor interest around the world, especially in the food and logistics sector in Sohar Port, and then it is imperative to provide a network to generate adequate levels of energy at reasonable prices in order to ensure the continuation of this continuous growth in the Sohar Free Zone.
